Practice 1: The Brown Cow in the tower

There is a brown cow in the tower.
How did the cow get in the tower?
The town clown locked her there.
The clown wanted the cow to plow, 
but the brown cow didn't want to plow.
Now the clown's cow is in the tower.

The citizens of the town can vote.
They can help the cow get down.
They have power in the town.
The clown must let the cow down.
The brown cow can come down from the tower.

Now the clown must plow.
The brown cow sees the clown plow.
Wow! The clown can sure plow!

mount > Mount a horse and ride up the mountain.

Reading for Accuracy and Fluency

Reading 1- A Book for Ted

Rose and her son, Ted, like to read books. Rose wants to buy Ted a book for his birthday. She goes to the bookstore. 

Rose asks the store clerk, “What is a good book for my son? He turns two on Friday.” The store clerk says, “Look for books with bright pictures. Look for books with only a few words on each page. Choose books about things your child likes.” 

Rose replies, “Ted likes trucks.” The store clerk shows Rose the children’s section. Rose finds a blue and red book with lots of trucks in it. It has few words on the pages. “Ted will like this book,” Rose thinks. She buys the book for him.


Reading 2 - A Sick Day 

It is a school day. Ann wakes up her child, Jill. Jill feels hot. She has a fever. Jill is sick. She should not go to school. She needs to stay home and rest. The school rule is that sick children must stay home. 

Ann calls the school office. She tells the school worker about Jill. The school worker thanks Ann for her call. Ann asks if there is any school work for Jill to do at home. “Yes,” says the school worker. “It will be in the school office at noon.”

The school staff knows that Jill is sick before the start of the school day. They know why Jill will not be in school.


Reading 3 - Calling in Sick
An alarm clock wakes Lynn. She gets out of bed and gets ready for work. She puts on her clothes and combs her hair. Then she lies down on the couch. / 

Lynn does not feel well. She has a fever. Her body aches. She is sick. What should she do? First, Lynn must call her boss. She calls and says, “Hi, Mr. Clark. This is Lynn. I am sick today. I will not be able to work.” 

“I’m sorry to hear that, Lynn. Thank you for calling. I hope you feel better soon. Let me know when you will return to work,” says Mr. Clark. “OK, I’ll call you when I am better,” says Lynn.



Reading 4 - Fresh Fish for Lunch

Tim and his dad plan to spend the day fishing. They want fresh fish for lunch. They drive to a lake and fish from shore. They put the bait on their hooks and cast the fish lines into the water. Now they wait for a bite. The day is sunny and warm. Tim and his dad talk and tell jokes. They eat a snack. No bites yet. 

Tim and his dad move to the dock. They put new worms on their hooks and cast them into the water. They wait. An hour goes by with no bites. It’s lunch time. They go to a café and order hot dogs! There is no fresh fish for lunch today.


Reading 5 - Getting to Work

Laura got a new job. She is a clerk in a store. The store is on the other side of town. It is four miles from her home. Laura does not own a car. She cannot drive to work. She cannot walk to work either. It is too far. How will she get to work? 

Laura asks a friend to drive her to work and back home, but her friend cannot do it. Maybe a bus could get her to work. Laura calls the city bus service. There is a bus stop two blocks from her home. Each bus ride costs two dollars. Laura will need to include the cost of the bus rides into her budget. Now Laura has a plan on how to get to work.
